Set up and run the EasyPrompter teleprompter

Use this guide to run a script, tune the reading view, connect displays, and control playback from a phone or device.

Run the Prompter

The control bar floats at the bottom of the screen. It has a shuttle row and a controls row.

Shuttle Row

The top row contains three elements:

• Left slot: when the timer is minimized, a small icon with a circular progress ring appears here. Click it to restore the full timer.
• Center: the shuttle bar, a spring-loaded drag-to-scrub control. Drag the thumb right to fast-forward or left to rewind; the further you drag, the faster the scroll. Release to snap back to center.
• Right slot: / Pin toggle. Lock the bar so it doesn't auto-hide during playback.

During playback, the panel enters ghost mode. It dims to 30% opacity and collapses to show only the shuttle row. Hover (mouse) or tap (touch) the shuttle row to reveal the full panel.

For directional scrubbing, hold Up or Down, use the arrows at the ends of the shuttle row, or drag the shuttle bar for proportional control.

Controls Row

The bottom row contains the main controls, arranged from left to right. The default keyboard shortcut appears beside each control when one is available.

On viewports ≤ 700px, Previous/Next Marker buttons are hidden and the panel stretches full-width. The top navigation also compacts in stages: editing, display, mode, device-control, and fullscreen actions remain available as icons, and the script switcher reduces to its arrow on the narrowest screens.

F toggles the fullscreen action in the top navigation. All keyboard shortcuts are customizable: click Controls in the top-right toolbar, then open Shortcuts & Hotkeys → Edit Mappings to reassign keys or map a Bluetooth pedal.

Markers

Press M or click the button to open the Jump to Marker panel, a named list of every marker in the script. The panel auto-scrolls to highlight the marker you're currently near. Click any entry to jump directly to it (playback pauses on jump).

Keyboard number jump: While the panel is open, type a marker number to jump directly to it (e.g. press 3 for marker #3). With 10+ markers, a short delay allows multi-digit entry (e.g. 1 then 3 for marker #13). A digit badge in the panel header shows the number as you type; if it exceeds the marker count, the badge flashes red.

The button only appears in the control bar when the script contains at least one marker.

Jumping to a marker always pauses playback. This applies to previous/next marker ([ / ]), the Jump to Marker list (M), and remote control marker buttons. Resume with Space.

Adjust Reading Settings

Click Settings to open the slide-up settings deck. It has three tabs:

Display Tab

Per-device settings stored locally (not synced to your account):

• Cue Marker: reading aid: Off, Arrow (pointer triangle), or Spotlight (gradient mask). Cue marker style is stored on this device.
• Mirror Mode: and for beam splitters
• High Contrast: maximizes text/background contrast

A theme toggle (light/dark mode) is available in the deck header, next to the close button.

Readability Tab

• All Caps: force all text to uppercase
• Sentence Breaks: insert visual breaks between sentences
• Pre-roll: controls how much blank space appears above the script before scrolling begins. Off removes the lead-in entirely, Compact adds a shorter gap, and Standard (default) gives you time to prepare before the first word reaches the cue marker.

Several settings show a small ⓘ info icon. Hover or tap it to see what the setting does. Tapping pins the tooltip open.

Script Defaults Tab

In the Script Defaults tab of the settings deck, two cards separate future defaults from the current script:

• Save stores the current formatting as the starting point for new scripts.
• Apply replaces the current script's formatting with your saved defaults.

Mirror mode, cue marker style, theme, timer size, and timer display mode always remain local to this device. If a named speaker profile is active, switch to Default before saving global defaults.

Speaker Profiles for Different Presenters

Speaker profiles store a presenter's reading choices, including font, speed, spacing, and cue position. Mirror orientation, theme, timer size, and timer display mode stay local to the device.

Click Speaker Profiles in the bottom control bar to switch between Default and named profiles, create a profile, or enter Manage mode. Manage mode exposes reset, rename, and delete actions in the same popover.

When you switch profiles, unsaved changes on the current profile trigger a Save & Switch / Discard & Switch dialog, so changes are not lost silently.

When your current access includes Speaker Profiles, a previously cached profile can be selected and applied while offline. Reconnect before creating, renaming, deleting, resetting, or saving profile changes. Speaker Profiles are unavailable on Free.

Configure Controls

Open the Controls pill in the top-right toolbar, then click the Shortcuts & Hotkeys tile and select Edit Mappings to open the Controller Mapping dialog.

The dialog is organized into four groups:

To remap a key or pedal: click any key badge (e.g. Space, Up) and then press the new key or pedal button on your device. Most presentation clickers and Bluetooth foot pedals register as keyboard events and map here directly. For dedicated hardware control surfaces, see Settings → Integrations to connect via Stream Deck plugin or Bitfocus Companion module.

Speed Increment sets how much the speed changes per arrow key tap, mouse wheel tick, or remote speed-slider step. Choose ±1, ±3, or ±6 LPM depending on how coarse you want the adjustment.

Scroll wheel behavior determines how the mouse wheel works in the teleprompter:

• Scroll (default): Wheel scrolls the script directly
• Speed: Wheel adjusts LPM up/down
• Shuttle: Wheel scans quickly backward or forward, then returns smoothly to pause

Shuttle sensitivity controls how quickly the shuttle bar returns to center (0 = floaty / 50 = responsive / 100 = twitchy).

Click Reset Defaults to restore all mappings and increment to their factory values.

Use the Timer

Click the timer to open its menu. Choose Remaining, Elapsed, or Clock, then use Smaller and Larger to resize it. Minimize moves the timer to a clock icon in the shuttle row; click that icon to restore it. Clock mode keeps ticking even when playback is paused.

On smaller screens (≤ 1270px), the timer docks beside or above the control bar instead of floating independently. Below 700px, the control bar stretches full-width and the previous/next marker buttons are hidden; the Displays and Controls buttons collapse to icons only.

Connect Viewer Displays

EasyPrompter keeps every connected prompting screen at the same place in the script while each screen uses its own reading settings.

1. Click the Displays button in the top-right cluster
2. Under Networked Displays, share the QR code or temporary session link with a phone, tablet, or computer
3. Under Local Displays, open another window on this computer or copy the OBS overlay link
4. Connected devices appear immediately under All Displays, and the button turns green with an active count badge

The operator is the person controlling playback. Viewer displays are the read-only screens that show the script to presenters.

In All Displays:

• Connected displays are highlighted. Registered displays that are offline are dimmed.
• Each row has a three-dot menu for actions on that display.
• Local windows keep their settings on this device and can rejoin later sessions.
• On a qualifying plan, an Admin or Producer can choose + Register on a connected network display to make it a managed display.

Managed Displays for Fixed Displays

Operator personal workspaces and Studio team workspaces can enroll displays from All Displays or Settings → Connected Displays.

• Operator supports up to 3 managed displays, including pending enrollments. Studio supports up to 10.
• An Admin or Producer names the display, assigns it to an operator, and shares a 10-minute QR code, activation link, or XXXX-XXXX code.
• If the code expires, choose Create New Code. Pending displays are removed after seven days without activation activity.
• OBS and similar browser sources must be registered from their live row after you add the OBS Overlay Link. They receive the short-lived code directly. To reconnect an existing managed source, use its key button in Settings → Connected Displays, then paste the complete one-time connection link into the OBS Browser Source URL field. The link is bound to that OBS source, so its code cannot be entered through the network display's manual confirmation screen. OBS verifies the complete link automatically. When there is no prompting content yet, the source shows a 15-second connection confirmation before becoming fully transparent. If an assigned session supplies prompting text during the countdown, the text replaces the confirmation immediately. Settings labels that connected idle state Ready. No permanent slate, connection error, or low-opacity message is rendered into the program feed.
• If a plan change lowers the workspace's display limit, disable displays until the enabled count meets the new limit. If the workspace drops below Operator, existing displays stay listed but cannot be activated or enabled until an eligible plan returns.

After confirmation, a managed display survives refreshes and browser restarts. A duplicate tab is rejected until the original closes. With no operator session, the display shows Standby and rejoins when prompting starts. A display that was already playing can continue through a temporary interruption; a newly opened display waits for reconnection.

On iOS and iPadOS 17.2 or newer, and on supported Android browsers, a registered network display offers an Install this display banner while it is on Standby or playback is paused. Earlier iOS and iPadOS versions do not show it because they cannot carry the registration into the installed app. The banner sits above the display controls and timer. In Clean Display mode it sits at the bottom edge, or above the timer when the timer is visible. Installation adds the EasyPrompter Display icon to the Home Screen. Opening it restores the same managed display assignment in that installed app. Dismissing the banner snoozes it for 10 days. The banner is not shown for temporary viewer links, OBS sources, disabled displays, unregistered viewers, or active playback.

An installed display still needs a network connection when it restarts. If it starts offline, it shows a retry screen without cached session or script content. On iOS and iPadOS, each installed icon keeps the managed display registration copied into it during installation. Android supports one installed EasyPrompter Display app per browser profile. It shares that profile's current EasyPrompter registration, so registering the profile as a different managed display also changes which display the installed app opens. If an iOS registration is replaced or revoked, create a new activation code, open the installed app, and enter the code on its registration screen.

A Managed Display is one browser screen that has been set up to reconnect automatically. An Integration Key is a secure code for hardware controllers such as Stream Deck and Companion.

Integration Key limits are 1 personal key on Creator, 3 personal keys on Operator, and 5 organization-owned keys on Studio. One key permits one active controller connection. A second connection using the same key is rejected, and controller connections do not consume viewer-display or phone-remote slots. Without an authenticated operator session, controllers wait and commands are not queued.

[!IMPORTANT] Manage enabled state, assignment, and revocation in Settings → Connected Displays. A managed display appears in Operate Mode, but it cannot be disconnected there. Reassignment clears the prior content before the display follows its new operator. Revocation takes effect immediately when the display is online. A still-connected source can then be registered again from All Displays without waiting for the old record to be removed. In Settings, green Online means the display is following a live session, amber Standby means a network display is open and waiting, blue Ready means an OBS Browser Source is open with transparent output, and gray Offline means the browser or OBS source is closed.

[!NOTE] During a network interruption, a managed display that was already playing continues at its last known rate. If the installed display is restarted while offline, it shows a retry screen and cannot restore a session until it reconnects. A fully offline screen cannot receive a revocation until it reconnects.

Adjust per-display settings: Click a display entry to set its font size, line height, margin, flip mode, and cue marker independently. Enable Clean Display to hide the viewer's control bar entirely, which is useful during live takes.

Add an OBS or vMix Teleprompter Overlay

Operator, Studio, and Enterprise workspaces can open Displays, copy the OBS Overlay Link, and add it to OBS Studio or vMix as a browser source. The capture page renders the prompting text with a transparent background and follows the active prompting session. Live Edit changes appear on the broadcast source while you type without resetting its prompting position. The timer and Cue Marker start off for a new broadcast source. Select the source in Operate Mode to enable Arrow or Spotlight independently. Managed sources remember the selected marker style and cue position in Default settings and named speaker profiles. Arrow is drawn over the video. Spotlight keeps the active reading line fully visible and renders the other prompting text at 50% opacity. Its operator drag handles are not rendered into the broadcast output. Broadcast sources always use Clean Display, so the Clean Display switch is locked on when an OBS or vMix client is selected. If the live connection is rejected or the capture page encounters an error, prompting text is removed and the source stays transparent while EasyPrompter attempts recovery.

[!IMPORTANT] OBS Spotlight changes only the prompting text opacity. It does not dim or otherwise alter the video beneath the transparent Browser Source.

During playback, the top navigation auto-hides. If displays or remotes are connected, a small floating pill appears in the top-right corner so you can still access display settings without stopping. Hover the pill to make it fully visible.

Identify displays: Click the ID button next to "Connected Displays" to flash large numbers on all displays.

Fullscreen on viewers: Desktop browsers usually enter fullscreen immediately. On mobile and iOS, the viewer may need to tap Tap to Enter Fullscreen. Tapping outside the message cancels fullscreen and tells the operator it was declined.

Markers are hidden on viewer displays. Bookmark-and-line section dividers only appear on the operator, so talent sees clean, uninterrupted text.

Local displays persist across sessions. When a prompting session ends, an open local display moves to Standby and automatically joins the next operator session in the same browser profile. Its name, settings, color, window placement, and fullscreen document context remain intact. Explicitly closing the display still closes its browser window; use Open Local Window later to restore that display slot.

[!IMPORTANT] Sessions survive sleep and temporary disconnections. If the operator computer sleeps, loses its network, or closes unexpectedly, EasyPrompter keeps the same session available for up to 24 hours. A display that was already playing continues at its last known rate, while a paused display remains paused. Phone remotes and hardware controls wait and do not queue commands. When the authenticated operator returns, the same session and live synchronization resume.

Closing or disconnecting one display only removes that display. To permanently stop the shared session, open Displays, choose End Session for Everyone, and confirm. Signing out also ends the session.

Monitor Connected Displays

Operate Mode

When at least one display is connected, a Read / Operate toggle appears inside the Displays pill in the top navigation bar. Operate Mode is included with Operator, Studio, and Enterprise. On Free and Creator, the locked Operate option opens upgrade choices and leaves the teleprompter in Read mode.

Choose Operate to replace the reading view with a mirror of the selected viewer. Use the display tabs to switch viewers, then adjust that viewer from the right panel. Font size, line height, margin, cue marker, mirror mode, timer visibility, fullscreen, and Clean Display can be set independently for each viewer.

Clean Display and Blackout

Use Clean Display to hide one viewer's controls while leaving its prompting content visible. Use Blackout to hide all connected local and network viewer displays during a break while keeping a dimmed operator view. These actions serve different purposes.

Use Remote Controls

Phone Remote

1. Click Controls in the top-right toolbar.
2. Under Mobile Remote, scan the QR code with your phone. No login is required.
3. Open Shortcuts & Hotkeys to remap keyboards, clickers, or pedals, or open Integrations for Stream Deck and Bitfocus Companion setup.

The phone remote has two layouts. Switch between them from the ☰ menu on the remote:

• Gesture mode: single-tap to play or pause, swipe horizontally to adjust speed, and swipe vertically for spring-loaded shuttle control. Double-tap the left or right edge to move between markers. When paused, double-tap the center to reset to the top.
• Button mode: use reset, previous and next marker, play or pause, hold-to-scrub rewind and fast-forward buttons, a speed slider, and the script switcher.

Multiple phones can connect. Remote controllers are separate from viewer screens.

Hardware Integrations

[!NOTE] Hardware controllers (Stream Deck, Bitfocus Companion, etc.) authenticate with Integration Keys and cannot be disconnected from the Hardware & Remotes dialog. To revoke access, remove the key in Settings → Integrations. Revoking a key disconnects the device immediately.

Multiple Stream Deck devices on the same computer share one connection and all reflect the same state. To use Stream Decks on different computers, generate a separate integration key for each machine.

Start from a Specific Paragraph

The START PROMPTER button at the bottom of the editor always launches the teleprompter from the top of the script.

To start from a specific paragraph, hover over any text in the editor or use your keyboard to place the cursor. A ▶ play icon appears in the left gutter next to the exact line you're on, even within long paragraphs. Click it to launch the teleprompter scrolled to that block. A brief cyan flash highlights the target paragraph so you can see where reading begins.

When you return through Full Edit or Edit Script, the editor scrolls to the paragraph you were last reading, places the cursor there, and flashes it with the same cyan highlight. If the script was modified while you were away, such as when a collaborator deletes content, the position clamps to the nearest valid block.

Free plan: Viewer screens show an "EasyPrompter Free Edition" watermark.

Network resilience: If the operator's network drops or the tab crashes, a viewer that was playing continues at its last known rate until the script ends or the operator reconnects. A paused viewer remains paused. When the authenticated operator returns, the same session reconnects and live synchronization resumes. If the operator intentionally navigates away from the teleprompter to the dashboard, viewers pause immediately. A viewer that is reloaded while fully offline cannot restore the session until it reconnects.
